Social TV: See Why Nathan Fillion Gets a Kick Out of Twitter
Nathan Fillion A few months ago Nathan Fillion was literally stalked by a Twitter follower. He reacted the same way any other Hollywood actor would: He took a picture with the guy, and then tweeted it. Fillion is best known these days for playing the crime-solving Richard Castle in ABC's Castle, but in the "Twitterverse," he's revered for his geek-chic resume (he starred on Joss Whedon's Firefly and in his online-only Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) and his must-follow Twitter feed. Whether it's his goofy musings or completely random photo uploads, fans can't get enough of Fillion's good-natured tweets. We spoke with him about his love for Twitter, how he thinks actors should use it and what he'll do when he hits the 1 million mark. TVGuide.com: You've really embraced the idea of using Twitter as a conversation with your fans. How were you first introduced to it?Nathan Fillion: Twitter was forced on me by [Horrible co-star] Felicia Day, already a Web celebrity herself. We were sitting at dinner and she had me download the Twitter application and sign up. Then she went on her Twitter and said, "OK, everyone, Nathan Fillion is now on Twitter." I came home to 2,000 emails saying "You have a new follower on Twitter." I turned off the email notifications after that. TVGuide.com: Were you hooked right away?Fillion: I was. I had tried MySpace and Facebook -- mostly because people were out there posing as me. But I found it all too demanding of my time. What I love about Twitter is that it's forced brevity. The 140-character maximum really forces you to be concise. I like the immediacy of it, and the fact that you can reach so many people in an instant; it blows my mind. Check out all the familiar faces returning to TV this year TVGuide.com: How did you get such a large following?Fillion: Thanks to Felicia Day, I got 2,000 followers immediately. I don't know how it built up from there, but I do know that I'm getting close to a million. I think at a million, I'm gonna...make a cake -- and tweet a picture of it. TVGuide.com: A lot of celebrities have their publicists tweet for them. Have you always controlled your own account?Fillion: I know of people who don't do it for themselves and to me that's just... come on. It's 140 characters; you really can't handle that? It's important to me, because if someone's following you on Twitter, they really ought to be following you on Twitter. If it's my Twitter, I want you to see what I'm doing. I want you to see what's going on with me. TVGuide.com: Have you had any strange Twitter experiences?Fillion: I was in NY City and I was sitting in a park and they were mowing the lawn, so I tweeted a picture of it and said to people, "Guess where I am?" As I started to walk, the tweets started coming in, saying, "Oh! You're in this park right across the street from my office! I can't believe you're here! I'm looking out my office window looking for you!" Then I went down the street and took a picture of Radio City Music Hall and said, "Guess where I am now?" I walked two more blocks, sat on a bench, and had a cup of coffee. All of the sudden this kid came up to me and goes, "Hey! I work in the neighborhood! I saw your tweets and I thought, I have to find you! I got a guy to cover for me at work because I had to try and get your autograph!" It was so funny. This kid was all out of breath and sweating and can you imagine him tracking my tweets? It killed me! So I took a picture with him and tweeted it. From Urkel to Sheldon: Check out our gallery of our favorite TV nerds TVGuide.com: Do you think actors and actresses who aren't into social media are doing themselves a disservice?Fillion: I don't. I think as an actor, your job is to act, to tell stories. You are providing entertainment, that is your job. I don't think it's your job to sign 8-by-10 photographs and send them out to your fans. I don't think it's your job to do a radio tour at 5 a.m. Your job is to portray a character, tell a portion of the story, and do your part in entertaining. I think there are benefits, but I don't think that it's necessary for your job. Me personally? I get a kick out of it.Watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Full Movie

Robertson had performed the role on tv and guaranteed the privileges to make certain he'd star within the feature too.Robertson's Oscar introduced him the type of visibility he'd labored so difficult to attain after almost 2 decades of labor in theater, television and flicks. However the actor felt his career was negatively influenced within the wake from the 1977 David Begelman check fraud scandal. Begelman, then mind of Columbia Pictures, had forged a $10,000 check constructed to Robertson and cashed it. Robertson's whistleblowing introduced him into collision with Hollywood's old-boy network, who Begelman would be a member up to date.Additionally to "Charly," he'll be appreciated because the guy Leader John F. Kennedy hands-selected to experience him within the film version of "PT 109," a merchant account of Kennedy's World war 2 exploits. Other high points incorporated the characteristics "Have a picnic" and "The Very Best Guy," the television version of "Times of Wine and Roses" and the 1966 Emmy-winning performance in "The Overall Game," a chapter of "Bob Hope Is definitely the Chrysler Theatre."Though Clifford Parker Robertson III was created into wealth in La Jolla, Calif., he was elevated by his maternal grandfather, his parents getting divorced right after he was created. The 9 Most Glamorous Moments in Roddy McDowall's Unbelievable, Star-Laden Home Movies
Please cherish this moment of blue-rare glamor, because I’ve seen nothing like it in my life: Actor Roddy McDowall’s home video collection was released to the public, and in one amazingly decadent vacation reel from 1965, the Planet of the Apes celeb cavorts with some of the biggest movie stars of all time. Is that Judy Garland in sky blue patio-wear? Sure is. Is that a Cat Ballou-era Jane Fonda? Indeed. Is that David O. Selznick, Natalie Wood, Julie Andrews, Paul Newman, Anthony Perkins, Rock Hudson and many, many more? Sigh! Yes! Let’s rank the nine most glamorous moments from these soundless clips and fan ourselves for the rest of the day. 9. Suzanne Pleshette, in a crisp white ensemble with pinstripe pants, shields her face and playfully kicks away the camera. Such meager defenses would not serve her well in The Birds. (Video #3, 2:55) 8. Jane Fonda, whose utterly perfect teeth cannot be denied, lowers her shades and unleashes some zany, cross-eyed, fun. (Video #3, 4:18) 7. Anthony Perkins gives a coy “fuck you” to the camera. Vulgarity in a ringer tee! Glamor! (Video #3, 3:48) 6. Roddy McDowall himself hogging the camera, squatting in an itty-bitty swimsuit, and playing around with a big Star of David. (Video #2, 1:45) 5. A long, gorgeous shot of Paul Newman posing with beer just before he darts at the water in shock-white shorts (Video #1, 1:00)
Change, same focus for weekly Variety
Earlier this weekend, we revealed the completely new weekly Variety -- that is exactly like that old one, but different. There is a new design along with a couple of additional features. But essentially, our mandate has not transformed: We are still since the business for those who work in the market. Currently of constant changes, there are not many news orgs still doing that, so we are pleased to keep your focus. But like many showbiz veterans, we came to the conclusion the time had come for any facelift. (I am talking about, Variety is 106, for Pete's sake, so just a little plastic surgery are only able to help.) I needed Daily visitors to understand, because there's lots of untrue stories available on the planet of showbiz confirming -- since you may have observed. There's remarkably little overlap between visitors of Daily and Weekly. Therefore if you are a readers of both, fine. If you are thinking about beginning with Weekly, that's fine too: With Variety, a regular membership to 1 allows you to definitely another. In either case, I needed to clarify the brand newOrexact same Weekly and, like a bonus, to fix some misperceptions about us. Some tips about what Weekly will not be: It will not be considered a "new direction" for that paper. It's will not be considered a consumer-gossip-superstar-driven consider the industry. Also it will not be a directory of tales which have already made an appearance in Daily. (It has not been that for several years, however, many visitors have that image. Ah, well...) Some tips about what Weekly is going to be: We'll keep going longer think pieces. And, because the biz grows its global view, we'll carry much more worldwide news. We may also be more and more people-focused, with profiles of professionals and creatives whom you should know about. Together with regular coverage -- film, TV, technology, legit, music, below the road, legal, etc. etc. -- you will find additional features for example Money Trail (a glance at showbiz funding) and Talent Watch (profiles of producers, company directors and authors whose encounters can provide experience in to the industry). And much more additions can come later on, both to Daily and Weekly. Previously 2 yrs, the range team started something we'd never done before: surveys to request visitors the things they wanted. The overwhelming response was that people ought to keep doing what we are doing, but better still. Visitors want serious coverage from the business. Pleased to oblige. Several also referred to us, passionately, like a community paper. That is true, despite the fact that the "community" is global. Since we are offering new methods to read Variety, for example news alerts and iPad programs, some visitors have expressed concern that people might phase the print business. Wrong, wrong, wrong. We are adding options, not subtracting them. The philosophy is you pay one subscription cost, and you will read us in whatever way, anywhere you would like. The reviews of print's dying were greatly exaggerated. Sure, everything has transformed in news reports world, but it is interesting the number of Variety visitors (across all decades) like print. (And, like a bitchy side note, it's interesting that showbiz writers who once predicted the dying of print are actually turning out newspaper models throughout honours season to fortify their little earnings. Gloat? Moi? Nah, existence is simply too short.) Other trade pubs and "industry" websites have attempted to reinvent themselves. Our biz model is working, therefore we have no need for -- or want -- a transformation. Making this not really a relaunch, not really a reinvention. Variety continues to be Business to business, as the saying goes. To repeat, it is the same but different: same goal of providing you with need-to-know info. Change is definitely unsettling, particularly in the tumultuous twenty-first century. But a couple of tweaks are in line with our tradition, otherwise we'd be covering vaudeville and Wild West shows. Weekly Variety is really a work happening, much like Daily and Variety.com. Provide us with feedback. We really do give consideration. Contact Timothy M. Grey at tim.grey@variety.com
